The producer
The Brolio estate covers a total surface area of 1,200 hectares, in the districts of Gaiole in Chianti and, to a lesser degree, Castelnuovo Berardenga. It is located within what amounts to an extensive basin, endowed with such a wealth of fauna that it is no surprise wolves, deer, porcupines and boar have all made their home here.
The common, defining factor in all of the vineyards cultivated by Brolio is the presence of dark stones named colombini - so called as they are shaped like dove feathers - which are to be found in all the farmhouses and which have always made cultivation very challenging.
A combination of favourable climate, exposure and soil composition make these stony areas particularly suited to vine growing, since vines will always thrive in such difficult soil. Added to this, there is the unique winemaking heritage of the Ricasoli family, developed over several centuries, which has made Brolio synonymous with all that is great about Italian wine. |
