  Alongside the renowned late-harvest wines and the famous partially-dried 'passito' wines (both of which come, more often than not, with inflated price tags), there is an entire legion of wines that cannot be easily criticised in terms of quality and, moreover, are readily available for sums that are within reach of the wine-drinking public at large. One of these wines is Solalto, a Tuscan passito. Amber in colour, it has an assertively spicy nose that is also sweet, full and complex on the palate. For our money, this is a really great wine, more than worth its weight in gold. Try it with spicy Gorgonzola as the conclusion to a hearty lunch and you'll soon see what we mean.

  If it is, indeed, true that every winegrowing area has its own prophet - a patriarch or matriarch who deserves credit for being the first to believe in the potential of that area - then for the Dogliani zone, there's little doubt as to who should receive the award: Quinto Chionetti has been the undisputed driving force behind the local viticultural renaissance. His personal philosophy, his production style and his unflagging passion come together to form a set of values that offer a more authentic and, in a certain sense, romantic take on the world of wine. So don't expect any sort of diversion from previous vintages - Quinto continues to produce his Dolcetto, his way, just like he has done from the outset. You may find it something of an acquired taste, given its initial austerity, but there's no denying it has a strong and pleasing personality all of its own.
